Google has all sorts of wonderful little widgets that are totally free and oh so handy if you go searching around to find them. But to save you doing the searching here’s the link for one : Google Alerts

Ever wondered how these authors pop up and say ” I just found this wonderful review” etc etc? Well, one way is of course just to obsessively google the name of every work you’ve ever had published, and every possible variation of your name, but a much easier way to go about it is to set yourself up on Google alerts and let their fingers (or spiders in this case) do the walking!

I found to get the best results I format my search term like this “Red Skirt, Cool Fountain”. To leave out the “” left too much open for interpretation and many irrelevant hits came up – I didn’t need the links about cool skirts, just the ones about my cool book :) . I also separated my name from my titles, so that the search finds individual chatter using my name versus only hits with my title and name connected – which is not always going to be the case. Also, if you find that people start referring to your title in a specific manner (say how in my personal correspondence Red Skirt, Cool Fountain is shortened to red skirt) pop in an alert for that too. You want to hear ALL the buzz, and if your story is getting people buzzing you definitely want to hear about it!

So go forth young Padawan and improve your Google-fu!
